La Mamounia

A legendary haunt of Gallic good taste, the iconic La Mamounia has had a makeover. Never fear, the distinguished heritage, elegance and glamour are still here. Formerly a royal palace and converted into a stylish hotel in 1922, this exclusive retreat has hosted Churchill, Hitchcock and Roosevelt to name a few. The international jet set will not be disappointed by the recent three year redesign overseen by Jacques Garcia, as period fittings remain  whilst décor and architecture has profited from an injection of Moorish opulence and chic art-deco finesse. Set in eight hectares of lush gardens and bordered by ancient city walls, La Mamounia is Marrakech’s sanctuary of choice.

207 rooms and suites have been refurbished to reflect traditional riad style, with latticed Moroccan woodwork, delicate jewel-coloured tiling and bold, antique lanterns. Plush silks, marble columns and luxurious linens add to the splendour to rooms, whilst private patios promise stunning vistas and peaceful seclusion. Suites feature private pools and champagne packed mini-bars, whilst all rooms boast king-size beds, rain showers and exclusively commissioned perfumes and toiletries by Olivia Giacobetti.

Dining at La Mamounia is nothing short of sumptuous. The sophisticated Le Français and the sultry L’Italien have both been awarded Michelin stars for their inventive Mediterranean cuisine. For more local flavours, reserve a table at Le Marocain, whilst Le Pavillon de la Piscine is the perfect venue for a midday mezze. Hidden away in the garden is Le Menzeh, a pretty pavilion serving delicate pastel macaroons, heavenly pastries and homemade ice creams. Order a martini in one of the hotel’s numerous, star-studded bars or marvel at stars of the cosmic variety from the rooftop of Le Bar Marocaine.

During the day, La Mamounia becomes the hippest hangout spot in town. Recline by the lagoon-like palm fringed pool or enjoy a Shiseido facial in Marrakech’s largest spa. Six outdoor massage cabins promise divine al fresco relaxation, whilst clay tennis courts have hosted some of the world’s best players. If the courts are crowded, enjoy a game of ping pong or visit the nearby riding stables. With designer boutiques and a renowned hair salon on the premises, La Mamounia makes it easy to maintain that celebrity polish.
